American wedding traditions: Here is to the bride and groom
A toast given by the best man is a common tradition of an American wedding. However, the act of the toast comes from the French. An actual piece of bread was placed in the bottom of a goblet of wine and the wine would be passed around the room for all to partake. The last person to get a drink from the goblet would eat the piece of toast.
American wedding traditions: Bride’s family on the left
The tradition of seating the bride’s family on the left side of the church began during the medieval times. Swords were part of the men’s attire during that time period. Swords were worn on the right side, and the men needed to be ready to draw them if the bride needed their protection.
The receiving line even has its roots in wedding superstitions. During ancient times, the married couple was considered blessed. It was believed that everyone who touched them would be blessed as well.
For the single men
Tossing of the garter was originally used as a deterrent. Wedding dresses were considered lucky and guests would try to obtain a piece of the dress. The bride would throw the garter as a way of escaping from the mob of people with her dress intact. The garter is a good place to start when the bride is looking for some vintage wedding inspiration.
